Perennial Rye
Arena
Arena results from a New Zealand
research and breeding program dedicated to developing new varieties of
cool-season turf grasses that originate from plants selected in the
Mediterranean Zone. These Varieties are environmentally suited to corresponding
climates in much of Chile, South Africa, Australia/New Zealand, and they will naturally adapt to
California's own similar climate zones. When compared to North American
Ryegrass varieties, ARENA offers many year-round advantages:
-
Fall: Arena germinates at lower temperatures.
Laboratory tests were undertaken to determine the level of germination at 41
degrees F. (Standard tests for seedling germination are undertaken at 68
degrees F). Arena seed germ counts greatly exceeded all USA-bred
cultivators included in the test.*
-
Winter: Arena maintains a higher level of
winter activity.
Low soil and air temperatures restrict most plant vigor,
yet winter wear tolerance studies showed that Arena has the highest
winter growth ranking among the elite perennial ryes tested.*
-
Spring: Arena shows best spring recovery.
The combination of winter tolerance and high turf density gave Arena
stronger recovery after harsh or excessive winter use.*
-
Summer: Arena comes equipped with an advanced
degree of drought tolerance
enabling it to adapt to California's hot-and-dry summer season.
Arena persists where other varieties fail: after 8 weeks of stress from summer
wear and weather, Arena had the highest remaining percentage of
groundcover in New Zealand trials. And Arena has shown that it can
withstand the lower mower heights becoming standard practice throughout
the world of professional baseball, soccer, and golf.*
